Why Autumn Kashmir Is Having a Moment
Summer in Kashmir means peak crowds, peak prices, and long queues at Gulmarg's Gondola. Winter means snow, but also closed roads and limited access to many valleys. Autumn threads the needle: pleasant days, cool evenings, thinning crowds, and landscapes that summer simply can't match.
The headline attraction is the Chinar season. From mid-September through November, Kashmir's iconic Chinar trees turn a deep, fiery red-gold, especially around Srinagar's Mughal Gardens — Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. A slow walk through these gardens in autumn light is one of the most photographed (and most underrated) experiences in the Valley.

Fewer crowds, better light. Dal Lake and Nagin Lake are calm after the monsoon, and a sunset Shikara ride hits differently without a dozen other boats jostling for the same frame.
Gulmarg without the rush. The meadow is still green with late-season wildflowers, and the Gondola runs both phases — up to Kongdori and on to Afarwat Peak — with none of the summer bottlenecks.
Offbeat valleys are opening up. Travelers are increasingly skipping the standard circuit for places like Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, and Bangus Valley — rolling meadows and forest trails that feel a world away from the popular stops, even though they're just a short drive from Srinagar.
Better rates. With demand lower than peak summer, houseboats, hotels, and packages tend to be more competitively priced — good for margins if you're building packages, and a strong selling point for guests.
